Welcome Aboard: Trooper Cori Shannon Joins the Sellersburg Team
The Sellersburg District has officially welcomed Trooper Cori Shannon, a dedicated law enforcement officer, who recently graduated from the prestigious 89th Indiana State Police Lateral Academy on March 19.
A Journey to Law Enforcement
Cori Shannon hails from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, where she completed her education at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in 2013. Following high school, she pursued a degree in Health/Occupational Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, graduating in 2018. Before steering her career towards law enforcement, Shannon worked in the healthcare sector for a year.
In 2019, she took her first steps into police work by being sworn in as a police officer with the Coldwater Michigan Police Department. Her journey continued back in Illinois, where she served with the Skokie Police Department before deciding to take on a new challenge with the Indiana State Police.
The Rigorous Training of the 89th Recruit Class
The Lateral Academy that Cori completed was no small feat. It comprised nine weeks of comprehensive training—over 300 hours—designed specifically for experienced officers. The curriculum tackled various subjects crucial for modern policing, including criminal and traffic law, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, and impaired driving detection. This thorough program ensures that graduates are well-equipped to tackle the complexities of law enforcement effectively.
Field Training: Bridging Theory and Practice
Now, as Trooper Shannon embarks on her field training, she will spend three months shadowing seasoned Field Training Officers. This hands-on experience will allow her to apply the knowledge acquired during her academy training to real-world policing scenarios. Only after completing this pivotal training will she hit the streets in her assigned State Police patrol vehicle.
The Significance of Trooper Shannon’s Arrival
The addition of Trooper Shannon is not just a milestone for her career but a strengthening of the Sellersburg District's police force. Her diverse background and commitment to safety will enable her to engage with the community effectively. As the police force continues to grow, the vigilance and dedication of officers like Shannon will play a vital role in fostering public trust and maintaining safety in the area.
Community Engagement: A New Chapter Ahead
As Trooper Cori Shannon integrates into her new role, it’s essential for community members to engage with their law enforcement officers. Building connections with local police can foster understanding and support, thus contributing to a safer, more informed community. Trooper Shannon represents not just a uniform, but a resource, a partner, and a dedicated advocate for the residents of Floyd County.
Let’s welcome Officer Shannon and support her and all law enforcement efforts in fostering a strong and secure community.
